Rimsky Yuen

Department of Justice, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)

Mr Rimsky Yuen, SC, was appointed Secretary for Justice on July 1, 2012. He was a barrister in private practice before joining the Government, specialising in commercial disputes. He also served as an arbitrator in international arbitrations and a mediator in commercial disputes.

Mr Yuen was appointed Senior Counsel in 2003 and a Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in 2006.

Mr Yuen had also been involved in various public duties, including Member of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission (which Mr Yuen continues to serve in his capacity as Secretary for Justice), Non-Official Member of the Independent Commission against Corruption Advisory Committee on Corruption, Chairman of the Transport Advisory Committee, Non-executive Director of Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority and Council Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

 

Brian W Tang
Managing Director

Brian W Tang is managing director of Asia Capital Markets Institute (ACMI), an industry-wide capital markets educational initiative that promotes professionalism, efficiency and innovation in the long-term best interests of corporate issuers and capital markets integrity. He is a corporate finance lawyer with nearly 20 years of experience in Hong Kong, New York, Silicon Valley and Australia. 

As an award-winning investment banking counsel at Credit Suisse in Hong Kong until 2013, Brian has advised on some of the Asia-Pacific region’s largest and most cutting-edge equity, debt and M&A transactions. He has also led inter-disciplinary teams to establish the bank’s Chinese investment banking joint venture and played a leading role in many industry-wide regulatory initiatives.  

Prior to that, Brian was at Wall Street law firm Sullivan & Cromwell in New York (working in Silicon Valley during the dotcom boom), as well as Mallesons in Perth, Australia, where he advised on cross-border capital markets, M&A, project finance and corporate governance. 

Brian graduated with an LL.M from NYU School of Law and a BA/LL.B with honours from UWA.  He also holds graduate diplomas from Securities Institute of Australia and Australian Institute of Company Directors. 

Stephen Man

Stephen has been practicing law in Asia for more than 20 years and for the last year has been supporting the phenomenal growth of Uber in the Asia Pacific region. Uber being at the forefront of innovation and the sharing economy has kept Stephen and his growing team extremely busy with novel and pressing issues that challenge him and his team on a daily basis.

Prior to Uber Stephen was with Yahoo where he spent 8 years working his way through the ranks to the position of VP and Deputy General Counsel, Asia Pacific. Before Yahoo Stephen worked for Preston Gates & Ellis (now K&L Gates) where his practice focused on corporate/commercial and information technology projects.

 

Richard Pu

Richard Pu, Assistant Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Tencent. He is responsible for legal risk management in the area of group corporate governance, compliance and regulatory, merger and acquisition, capital market, financing, investment portfolios, technology transaction and international operations.  Richard studied Juris Doctor at the Melbourne University Law School.  He practiced corporate and M&A, capital market and commercial law at Slaughter and May (Hong Kong) and Mallesons Stephen Jaques (Melbourne) before joining Tencent in 2010.

Yong Kai Wong

CITIC Capital Holdings Limited 

Yong Kai Wong is the Head of Legal and Compliance and is also the Company Secretary. He is responsible for overall legal and execution coverage for CITIC Capital’s investment activities, as well as all aspects of CITIC Capital’s general corporate, company secretarial and legal functions. 

Mr. Wong has over 10 years of experience in alternative investments with broad experience across U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific in a whole range of transactions ranging from complex debt financings/restructurings, capital markets, structured/securitised products, corporate M&A transactions including corporate real estate/special situations, private equity and hedge fund formations. Prior to joining CITIC Capital, he worked as the Associate General Counsel for APG Asset Management Asia, one of the world’s largest institutional investors. Prior to that, he has worked in various reputable international law firms in the U.S., London, Hong Kong and Singapore. 

Mr. Wong has dual qualifications in law and finance. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and an LL.M. (First Class Honors) from the University of Cambridge. 

 

Christopher TO
Executive Director
Hong Kong Construction Industry Council

Dr. Christopher TO is independent mediator and arbitrator who is on the panels of various leading global alternative dispute resolution bodies. He has handled a variety of complex international cases as mediator and arbitrator (sole, chair and co-arbitrator, under various institutional and ad hoc arbitration rules).

Christopher holds qualifications in computing, engineering and law. He is an accredited mediator, chartered arbitrator, chartered engineer, chartered information technology professional and a law professor. He has written substantially on the subject of international arbitration and mediation in particular has written the leading handbook, Arbitration Law in Hong Kong, published by Lexis Nexis Butterworths as well as the leading textbook on Mediation, Mediation in Hong Kong: Law and Practice by Kluwer Law.

 

Oliver Massmann
Partner,
Duane Morris Vietnam LLC

Oliver Massmann has more than 15 years experience working as commercial lawyer in Vietnam. He practices in the area of corporate international taxation and on power/water projects, matters related to oil and gas companies and telecoms, privatization and equitization, mergers and acquisitions, and general commercial matters for multinational clients in relation to investment and doing business in Vietnam.

 

Mr. Massmann is currently working on several investment projects as well as taxation matters and advising the Ministry of Electrical Power on building the power generation infrastructure in Myanmar. He is a registered Arbitrator of the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (The VIAC). He is also the only foreign lawyer in Vietnam who is presenting to the National Assembly of Vietnam in Vietnamese language and teaching International law in Vietnamese language at the Ministry of Justice in Hanoi.

 

Mr. Massmann is a 1994 graduate of Bochum Law University, first state exam and Ministry of Justice, Duesseldorf Germany, second state exam 1997. He is holding a LLM degree in international taxation from St. Thomas University Florida- United State of America. He is admitted to the Bar Association in Berlin and a licensed foreign lawyer in Vietnam.

 

Steven Yu

Mr. Yu has long focused his practice on the areas of foreign direct investment (FDI), mergers and acquisitions (M&As), private equity/venture capital, fund formation, cross-border technology transfer and other general corporate matters. Before joining us, Mr. Yu had ten-year experience with leading international and domestic law firms and gained extensive experience in representing multinational corporations, state-owned enterprises and private companies on their inbound/outbound investments, M&As and restructuring transactions. The legal services rendered by him typically include, among others, structuring the transactions, conducting due diligence, drafting, reviewing and negotiating documents, issuing legal or advisory opinions as well as assisting with the closing matters and completion of government approval procedures. The projects that Mr. Yu has been involved in encompass a wide spectrum of industries, including machinery, chemical, logistics, TMT, consumer staples, environment service, pharmaceuticals/healthcare, clean energy, commercial property, entertainment, education and tourism.

 

 

Jerry Liu

Jerry Liu is a partner with our Shanghai office.  Mr. Liu has over 10 years of practice experience focusing on foreign Greenfield investment, inbound and outbound cross-border mergers and acquisitions, IP related issues associated with investment projects, general corporate, compliance, commercial arbitration, and merger control matters.  Mr. Liu’s clients cover a wide range of industrial sectors, including without limitation manufacturing, automobile, aerospace, energy, pharmaceutical, agriculture, retail, TMT, and consulting.  Meanwhile, Mr. Liu also serves Chinese companies with their outbound investment projects and has provided legal services to Chinese companies investing or acquiring targets in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific regions.

Mr. Jeffrey Zhu specializes in private equity / venture capital, mergers and acquisitions and corporate. Mr. Zhu works with prominent multinational corporations and PRC enterprises in the fields of internet, financial services, hotel, education, advertising, automobile, consumer products pharmaceuticals and petrochemical.

 

Mr. Zhu obtained his PhD from ECUPL and also graduated from TLBU in Korea and Renmin University of China. Mr. Zhu published articles on Case Study, Review on Corporation Law and other academic journals.

 

Meph Jia Gui

Admitted to practice laws in both China and the U.S., Meph Jia Gui advises on various intellectual property (IP) matters in China relating to the creation, exploitation and protection of IP rights, including contentious and non-contentious IP matters.

 

Meph Jia Gui was awarded by the Asian Legal Business as “the Client Choice Top 20 Lawyers in China (2013)”, and notably, he is the only IP lawyer winning the award in 2013. Meph Jia Gui won the same award in 2014. He was ranked as one of the leading IP lawyers in China by Chambers & Partners, China Law & Practice and Asia Law & Practice, and recognized as an IP Star in China by Managing IP in 2015.

 

As the first Chinese lawyer becoming an arbitrator of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Meph Jia Gui is the youngest among the very few Chinese WIPO arbitrators. Some lawsuits he handled were recognized by the Supreme People's Court of China as top 10 exemplary cases. Meph Jia Gui was invited by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China as an IP expert to make expert appraisal on State-sponsored national technology projects. He is the youngest IP expert listed in the first IP Expert Pool of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China. Meph Jia Gui is a CIETAC Domain Name Expert and a Standing Committee Member of the China IP Law Association.

Jerry Fang

Mr. Jianwei (Jerry) Fang is a partner based in our Shanghai and Beijing offices, focusing on compliance, risk management and dispute resolution, as well as general corporate and regulatory matters.

 

Prior to joining Global Law, Mr. Fang worked with Cleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton LLP in New York and Beijing and Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP in Hong Kong, where he started as a corporate lawyer, and later focused on cross-board commercial and securities class litigation, white-collar defense, and government investigations.

 

As a former Chinese judge, Mr. Fang represents domestic and international clients in cases involving investment disputes, commercial contracts, international trade, intellectual property, competition and trade secrecy matter.  In addition, Mr. Fang has extensive experience in compliance and anti-corruption maters, including performing due diligence prior to investment and conducting internal investigations .

 

Mr. Fang also assists Chinese and international clients in securities, merger & acquisition, private equity, foreign direct investment matters.

 

Harold Shen

Harold SHEN’s practice areas include M&As, capital markets, PE&VC and FDI, etc., involving a breadth of industries such as internet finance, TMT, real estate, retail, mining, manufacturing, biomedicine, steel, chemicals, clean energy and education, etc..

 

In the area of M&As, Mr. Shen has provided legal services and supports for dozens of listed and private, domestic and overseas companies in connection with their acquisitions in the PRC, the representative cases amongst which are Jin Jiang Hotels’ acquisition of two A/B share listed companies in its Group, acquisitions of industrial real estate projects by a portfolio company invested by Warburg Pincus, and acquisitions of P2P and other restricted business by foreign clients, including Hong Kong listed companies, etc..

 

Through providing legal advisory services in numerous capital markets transactions, Mr. Shen helped his issuer and underwriter clients complete successful IPOs, RTOs and bond placement within and outside of the PRC. Mr. Shen also has extensive experience in PE&VC industry, and has represented well-known investors such as Goldman Sachs, Carlyle, Nomura, Prax Capital.

Kelvin Kwok

Kelvin joined Des Voeux Chambers in 2015. He is developing a broad civil and commercial practice with an emphasis on competition law matters. He has been involved in a wide variety of civil and commercial matters during his pupillage with Dr. William Wong S.C., Jose-Antonio Maurellet, and Harry Liu.Kelvin has substantial experience handling competition law matters concerning the competition provisions in the Broadcasting Ordinance and exclusion/exemption-related applications under the Competition Ordinance. He has been invited by the Construction Industry Council, the Law Society of Hong Kong, Thomson Reuters, the Hong Kong Competition Association, the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries, Euromoney, LexisNexis and law firms to give CPD talks on the Competition Ordinance. He is a member of the Special Committee on Competition Law of the Hong Kong Bar Association, a Non-Governmental Advisor to the International Competition Network (ICN), and a co-opted member of the Competition Policy Committee of the Consumer Council.


Kelvin also teaches and researches competition law, intellectual property and other areas of law as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), where he serves as the Director of the International Mooting Programme and a moot team coach for the Herbert Smith Freehills Competition Law Moot and the Oxford International Intellectual Property Law Moot.  Prior to joining the HKU Faculty of Law in 2012, he obtained his BBA(Law) and LLB degrees (both with First Class Honours and ranking first in his cohort) from HKU in 2010 and his LLM degree (with the equivalent of High Honours) from the University of Chicago in 2011, and has received numerous scholarships and awards over the years.

Jezamine Fewins is a partner in the litigation practice of Stephenson Harwood Hong Kong. She acts for a wide variety of international corporations spanning industries including: sportswear, fashion, automotive, electronics, traditional Chinese medicine, health and beauty, food and beverages, LEDs, chemicals, aviation, education, mining, hospitality and transportation. Jezamine is also the head of intellectual property and employment groups Hong Kong.

 

Jezamine advises on all aspects of intellectual property. Her work includes: trademarks, patents, registered designs and copyright. Jezamine assists clients to develop both protectable and strong brands particularly in the areas of licensing and franchising. In addition to providing advice and assistance on the positioning and protection of their brands, Jezamine has represented clients in enforcement actions in the High Court. She has obtained injunctive orders against infringers and orders for the delivery up of infringing goods. Mr Albert Ho, CMSM, CFE

Mr Ho is holding the rank of Assistant Commissioner of the Customs and Excise Department in the Hong Kong SAR government and has worked in various aspects of Customs enforcement and management.  He is currently overseeing all the intelligence and investigation work in the Department, covering narcotics, intellectual property crimes, smuggling, illicit cigarette activities, organized crimes and money laundering.

 

He has a keen interest in crime prevention and detection both professionally and academically.  He is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) in the United States and is a director of the local Chapter of the ACFE in Hong Kong.  He holds a Bachelor and Master degree in Laws and another Master degree in Applied Criminology at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.  He is also a barrister of the Middle Temple of England and Wales, and the High Court of Hong Kong.

 

In 2012, he was awarded the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Medal for Meritorious Service (CMSM) by the Hong Kong SAR government.  In 2015, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the World Customs Organization.
