Event Overview

Returning to Hong Kong for the 18th run, Asian Legal Business invites you to save the date for our Hong Kong flagship event of the year, the Practical Law ALB Hong Kong In-House Legal Summit 2021 taking place live in person on 7 September 2021 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong.

This signature annual summit gathers together in-house counsels, legal practitioners and industry experts to discuss recent regulatory changes, hot pressing legal issues and best practice solutions in Hong Kong and the region.

In view of the latest social distancing rules by the Hong Kong government, this summit will take place via a live event format in a hotel venue subject to the maximum attendee capacity limit permissible. However no F&B will be served during this event (except for drinking water which will be made available) and face masks required to be worn at all times due to the guidelines imposed by the Hong Kong government.

Dr James Ding
Commissioner of Inclusive Dispute Avoidance and Resolution Office
Department of Justice, HKSAR 

Dr. James Ding is the Commissioner of Inclusive Dispute Avoidance and Resolution Office, Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. He has been awarded the Chief Executive Commendation for Government/Public Service in 2021.

He coordinates and promotes various policy initiatives for dispute avoidance and resolution as well as on advancing the rule of law. He has published on different subjects of international law and international cooperation, and has given various presentations at international and regional conferences, including more recently, a workshop during 2020 Hong Kong Arbitration Week, events at the Hong Kong Legal Week 2020, Mediate First Pledge Event 2021 as well as various APEC workshops on online dispute resolution. He is also currently the Chair of the APEC Economic Committee.

He obtained LL.B.(Hons) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (Distinction) from the University of Hong Kong, LL.M. from Kyushu University, Japan (under the Monbusho scholarship) and Ph.D. from the University of Queensland, Australia. He became a barrister in Hong Kong in 1997 and joined the Department of Justice in 1999. He also taught on a part-time basis at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong and the Open University of Hong Kong during the academic years of 1998 and 1999.

Amy Ng, General Counsel Asia, CBRE Limited

As CBRE’s General Counsel in Asia, Amy works with CBRE offices in Asia covering, Hong, Kong, Taiwan, Macau, the PRC, Japan, Korea, South East Asia and India. She advices management, businesses, and offices across Asia on corporate and commercial legal issues and matters, strategies, transactions as well as organizational matters including labour and employment matters, resolving disputes and litigations etc. 

Amy was also the General Counsel for CBRE Global Investors Asia Pacific since 2005. During the time she managed the CBRE GI regional legal team across businesses in Asia, providing legal advice and support to the business across a range of areas, including corporate and strategic matters. From 2005 to 2008 she was also the Chief Compliance Officer for the Real Estate Investment business responsible for all compliance and licensing related matters in the region. 
 
Amy is admitted both in HK and the UK, and had spent her formative years living and educated in the U.K. She is fluent in Cantonese, English & Mandarin. Prior to joining CBRE, she had been working in an international law firm specializing in corporate commercial & corporate finance work. Amy was voted and is recognized as one of 100 corporate counsels in APAC (Legal 500 Publication).

Han Wai Khor, Managing Director, General Counsel, ICBC International Holdings Limited

Han Wai is General Counsel, Managing Director, at ICBC International Holdings Limited (ICBCI) where he has responsibility for overseeing all legal matters arising from its various business lines. 

Prior to joining ICBCI, he was Director and Senior Counsel at a bulge bracket investment bank where he worked on principal investments, corporate derivatives and strategic equity transactions across Asia. He was also formerly in private practice with a Magic Circle law firm in Hong Kong and with leading law firms in Singapore.

Han Wai is a graduate of the National University of Singapore and is admitted to practice in Hong Kong and Singapore. He is also fluent in English and Mandarin.

Frederick Chan, General Counsel & Assistant Director, Canon Hong Kong Company Limited

Frederick Chan is the General Counsel and Assistant Director of Canon Hongkong Company Limited. Canon is one of the leading companies developing innovative products and holding the most technology patents in the imaging industry. Canon Hongkong is a Total Imaging Solution provider, responsible for professional pre-sales, marketing and after-sales services for all Canon products and solutions in Hong Kong and Macau.

Frederick is based in Hong Kong and leads a team of lawyers and legal professionals to provide legal and risk-related advice to all company functions and units within the Hong Kong and Macau regions. Besides legal functions, Frederick is also in charge of other business operations including supply chain management and sales administration departments.

As a qualified solicitor in Hong Kong, Frederick has solid experience in technology areas and worked as a legal manager of a technology company before joining Canon Hongkong. He was trained and practiced as a litigator in a well-known criminal law firm in Hong Kong prior to switching in-house.

Jane Yin, Managing Director and Head of Legal and Compliance, Fosun Hani Securities Limited

Jane is in charge of legal and compliance sectors and her team is widely praised as "responsive, professional and of good communication with business units". She is now a member of the Risk Control and Compliance Committee of Fosun Group's Technology and Finance Sector and has played a major role in a number of projects. She was awarded "Young lawyer of the Year" in 2020 ALB Law Awards, and her team was included in GC Powerlist by Legal 500 in 2019. Meanwhile, she is a volunteer in End-of-Life Care Project sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club to provide psychological support services for terminally ill patients in the community.

Rachel Huf, General Counsel Asia Pacific, Legal, Barclays

Rachel Huf is a Managing Director and General Counsel for Asia Pacific. She is based in Hong Kong. 

Rachel joined Barclays in 2004 as Head of Legal, Hong Kong. In 2011, her remit expanded to include North Asia, and, in 2013 she was appointed Head of Markets Legal, Asia Pacific. In October 2013, Rachel became Deputy Global Co-ordinator for Markets Legal.   Rachel took on her current role in April 2015.  She is a member of the Asia Pacific Executive Forum, the Barclays Group Legal Executive Committee, the Barclays Bank PLC Legal Executive Committee and chairs the Asia Pacific Legal Regional Management Team.

Between 2013 and 2015, Rachel took on additional responsibility as Chair of the Employee Network Groups in Asia Pacific, responsible for managing and leading Barclays’ diversity and inclusion efforts in the region. She was a founding member of Barclays’ Women’s Initiatives Network in Asia Pacific, and is currently the Executive Committee sponsor for Spectrum, Barclays LGBT network.   She is also the Be Well Sponsor for Asia Pacific and is the Sponsor of the Barclays Group Legal Executive Committee Skills for the Future strategic initiative and Legal Professional Mobility Programme.

Shaun Ansell, Head of Legal and Compliance, Asia-Pacific, GPB Financial Services Ltd

Shaun Ansell is a Board director, Manager in Charge of Compliance/AML and Head of Legal and Compliance Asia Pacific for GPB Financial Services Ltd, a 100% subsidiary of Gazprombank(GPB) based in Hong Kong since June 2016. GPB is Russia’s third largest bank and an arm of Gazprom a global energy company and the Russian Federation.

Steven Yeo, General Counsel, Asia, Manulife

Steven Yeo is General Counsel, Manulife Asia. Based in Hong Kong, Steven is responsible for setting the strategic direction for legal and compliance services and corporate governance across Asia, and has oversight of all legal, compliance, corporate governance and government & public affairs units supporting Manulife’s businesses in Asia.  He is a member of Manulife’s Asia Executive Committee, Asia Risk Committee, Global Operational Risks Committee, and the Global Legal, Compliance, Audit & Government Affairs Leadership Team, as well as a non-Executive Director of a number of key legal entities including Manulife (Singapore) Pte. Ltd (where he is the Chairman of the Board), Manulife Life Insurance Company in Japan, Manulife-Sinochem Life Insurance Company Limited in China and Manulife Financial Asia Limited.

Steven has been covering legal affairs in Asia since 1996, and has advised on a number of regulatory developments across Asia, including advising the Hong Kong Trustee & Custodian Forum on the Hong Kong Mandatory Provident Fund (“MPF”) and making successful oral and written representations on behalf of the industry to Hong Kong’s Legislative Council on revisions to the Hong Kong MPF legislation. 

He joined Manulife after 18 years at Citigroup, first in London where he was Senior Counsel Europe, and later in Asia, where he was a non-Executive Director of Citibank China and Managing Director and Asia General Counsel of its Corporate & Commercial Bank, Global Transactions Services, Structured Finance as well as other divisions. Before that, Steven trained with and was a solicitor in the London banking department of one of the UK’s ‘magic circle’ law firms. He is a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England & Wales.

Ronald Cheung, General Manager – Legal & Risk Management, Fung Group

Ronald is the General Manager – Legal & Risk Management in the Fung Group. He looks after the Fung Group’s Logistics business (LF Logistics) and is the head of the Enterprise Risk Management function in the Fung Group. Ronald manages the Group’s exposure to various enterprise risks, including the management of the Group’s insurance portfolio, loss prevention and investigation, trade compliance and data privacy and protection. Ronald also plays a vital role as part of the Group’s crisis management and business continuity planning network. Ronald has a litigation background and was trained in Clyde & Co Hong Kong and London specializing in maritime disputes and international arbitration.

Joshua Cole, Practice Group Head, Corporate Transactions - Asia, Ashurst

Joshua Cole is the head of Ashurst's corporate transactions practice in Asia. He specialises in cross-border mergers & acquisitions and joint ventures throughout Asia.

Joshua has advised on a number of high-profile international acquisitions, disposals and joint ventures throughout the region and across a range of industry sectors, including financial services, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, energy and resources and retail.

Chin Yeoh, Partner, Ashurst

Chin Yeoh is a partner in Ashurst's corporate transactions practice.

John Marsden, Partner, Mayer Brown

John Marsden is a partner of Mayer Brown and co-leads the Global Restructuring practice. He represents clients in a wide range of matters in the commercial and corporate context. His assignments have included financing transactions, non-performing loan disposals and corporate restructurings. John has provided advice in such large-scale restructurings or insolvencies as Asia Pulp and Paper, Pacific Andes, the Moulin Group, TMT and Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group, all of which are multi-jurisdictional transactions. John was placed into the Shanghai office for three years during which time he was involved with a number of substantial property acquisition and financing transactions.

John has been named a Band 1 Restructuring and Insolvency Lawyer by Chambers Asia Pacific (2013-2021), Market Leader in Restructuring and Insolvency by IFLR1000 (2018-2021) and Leading Lawyer in Restructuring and Insolvency by IFLR1000 (2010-2017).Chambers Asia Pacific (2018) described John as he provides an “aggressive and punchy service, but is very commercial too”. Calvin Koo, Lawyer, Kobre & Kim 

Calvin Koo represents clients, including ultra-high-net-worth individuals, pursuing offensive and defensive strategies related to cross-border government enforcement matters and regulatory enforcement actions. He also advises clients throughout Asia in high-stakes international investigations by government and regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission; the U.S. Department of Justice; the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption; and the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission.

Mr. Koo also counsels financial technology clients regarding cryptocurrency-related disputes and investigations, as well as victims of fraud on international asset tracing and judgment enforcement strategies.

Before joining Kobre & Kim, Mr. Koo practiced at Winston & Strawn LLP, where he represented corporations and their executives in white-collar investigations, class-action securities disputes, bankruptcy and other related litigation.

Bryan is the Practical Law Hong Kong Lead. Prior to joining Thomson Reuters, he practiced commercial and administrative law in Canada and worked as an in-house lawyer at a listed group in Hong Kong.  He is a qualified lawyer in British Columbia, New York and Hong Kong.

Sandra Lee, Asia CEO, BMS Group

Sandra is the Chief Executive Officer for BMS Asia, the most recent addition to the BMS Group. BMS Group is the independent global specialist insurance and reinsurance broker operating in key hubs around the world, including London, New York, Bermuda and Australia, since 1980.

Tasked with launching BMS in Asia, Sandra will initially focus on building out our M&A insurance broking capabilities in Asia, complementing BMS Group’s existing capabilities in London, Canada and Australia. Drawing from BMS Group’s existing expertise, she and the BMS Asia team will also look to expand BMS’ offering in Asia from M&A insurance into additional areas such as reinsurance, renewable energy, marine and capital markets advisory.

Sandra has more than 16 years of legal and insurance experience, mostly spent advising leading international private equity and corporate investors on the legal aspects of their M&A transactions as well as placement of various M&A insurance solutions. Experienced in understanding client’s risks and needs under different capacities, She will look to use this experience to bring the best insurance solutions to our clients in my current capacity.
