It gives us great pleasure to present to you the ALB Guide to the Greater Bay 2022. This is the second edition of this annual guide that spotlights one of the most exciting regions in the world.

In just the first three years since it was first unveiled, the GBA is living up to its promise, growing faster than the average across China, and continuing the southward shift of the centre of gravity of China's economic activity. The GBA is brimming with education, talent, and capital, and the connection to Hong Kong gives it unique access to global capital and services. In the longer term, it should be able to act as a catalyst for China’s broader Belt and Road Initiative, including becoming a dispute resolution hub for resolving investment and commercial disagreements dealing with Belt and Road projects.

However, for all the opportunities, there remain challenges, particularly in the legal and regulatory space. Given that the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau have three distinct legal systems, currencies, and capital account regimes, companies face potential obstacles in areas such as cross-border investment and mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, financial services, regulatory compliance, real estate, taxation, and intellectual property, among others. This guide, which compiles expert contributions from some of the leading legal commentators when it comes to the Greater Bay Area, hopes to assist companies in resolving some of these challenges.
