    Each year, ALB invites an independent judging panel of senior and expert legal industry leaders from various sectors corresponding to the diverse list of award categories. ALB is pleased to introduce some of the distinguished judges. The rest of the panel will be revealed on the evening of the awards.

    CHUNGJIN

    Chung Jin Chung
    Senior Legal Counsel, Korea Gas Corporation

    Mr. Chung Jin Chung is a senior legal counsel at Korea Gas Corporation in Korea.
    He has 11 years’ experience, advising companies on their energy projects around the world and has experience across the energy value chain (particularly oil & gas) in developed markets and emerging markets. 

    He is chair of Energy & Resources Committee at LAWASIA, chairman at Intra-Pacific Energy Coalition, an international arbitrator at Korea Commercial Arbitration Board International, chair of Energy & Nature Resources at International Association of Korean Lawyers, a specialist mediator at Singapore International Mediation Centre, an advisor at Korea Plant Industries Association, a member of Marketing & Communication Committee of International Gas Union, and a member of Energy & Industry Committee at Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Korea. 

    Choong

    Choong-Kee Lee
    Professor of Law, Hongik University

    Choong-Kee Lee is the Professor, Former Dean of College of Law at Hongik University. He is also acting as Vice President of Korea Trust Association, Korean Association of Fair Economy and Korea Law Professors Association. In 1986 he received LLB at Seoul National University, and LLM of Cambridge University in 1991. In 1994, he received PHD at Sheffield University. Mr. Lee's publishing include Standard Text Books :Trust Law; Fiduciary Law; Law of Non-Profit Organisations. 

    Mr. Lee advised Government ministries, including Ministry of Justice on Enactment/Amendment of Trust Act, Financial Supervisory Commission on Enactment of Asset Management Act, Ministry of Labor on Enactment of Retirement Pension Protection Act and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transportation on Autonomous Vehicles and Mobility Data.

    Mr. Lee conducted National R&Ds include Introduction and Regulation of Autonomous Vehicles and designing national platform for mobility data.

    David Soonyoub Kwon Compliance Officer, North East Asia, Ericsson

    David Soonyoub Kwon
    Compliance Officer, North East Asia, Ericsson

    David Soonyoub Kwon is a Compliance Officer at Ericsson responsible for North East Asia including Mainland China, Hong Kong & Macau, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. For this role, his responsibility is to implement Ericsson’s Ethics & Compliance Program into the area. Especially, he is leading Compliance Consultation Desk and Third Party Management Program in the area. He also has the group responsibility for three compliance areas: Anti-Corruption, Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Trust.  

    Before taking this role, he was a Legal Director responsible for several Ericsson subsidiaries in Korea including Ericsson-LG, a joint venture company between Ericsson and LG Electronics. He was also a reliable communicator by and among shareholders, Board of Directors and the company management of Ericsson-LG JV in his capacity as a Corporate Secretary between 2006 and 2016.  Before joining Ericsson Group, he worked for several multinational companies as well as a renowned local company. 
    He is an attorney at law and admitted to the DC Bar in USA. He is also a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional – International (CCEP-I).

    Haksoo


    Professor Haksoo Ko
    Professor, School of Law, Seoul National University

    Haksoo Ko is a Professor of Law at Seoul National University School of Law in Seoul, Korea. He primarily teaches areas in Law and Economics as well as in Data Privacy and Artificial Intelligence Law. He regularly sits on various advisory committees for the Korean government and other public and private institutions. Prior to joining academia, he practiced law with law firms in New York and in Seoul. He currently serves as President of Asian Law and Economics Association; President of Korean Association for AI and Law; Co-director of SNU AI Policy Initiative; and Associate Director of SNU AI Institute. He had visitor appointments at UC Berkeley, University of Hamburg, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, University of Freiburg, and National University of Singapore. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Seoul National University and received both J.D. and Ph.D. (Economics) degrees from Columbia University in New York, USA.

    Group General Counsel, Kering Korea

    Dow Kim is the Group General Counsel at Kering Korea. He is responsible for legal and compliance affair arising out of the businesses throughout all Kering Group Brands in Korea, including Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Brioni, Boucheron, Pomellato, Dodo, Qeelin, Ulysse Nardin, Girard-Perregaux, as well as Kering Eyewear.

    Prior to Kering, Dow spent 12 years at Oracle Korea and had colorful experiences as Senior Legal Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for 11 years. In summary, he is experienced in (i) engaging in IP rights related matters including without limitation IP litigation, (ii) engaging in licensing and services transactions and mergers and acquisitions, (iii) leading the operations of the legal department at Oracle Korea with over 1300 employees, (iv) serving as a liaison between Oracle Korea and Oracle HQ and harmonizing the cultural and differences between them. 

    Ingu Bae

    Ingu Bae
    Attorney, Logos Law 

    Ms. In-Gu Bae worked as a judge since March 1996 until she retired in February 2017. When she worked at the Seoul Family Court, she handled many family and juvenile cases and had some significant achievements regarding family and juvenile cases. She is now a partner at LOGOS Law LLC, and she works as the head of the Family & Inheritance Law Center at LOGOS seeking ways to resolve family disputes in a more efficient and amicable manner. She is also the chief of the Special Committee on Children and Youth of the Korean Women Lawyers Association and is seeking ways to enhance recognition of young children and youth’s human rights.

    Jihyun Cathie Tak
    Counsel and Compliance Officer for Asia Pacific and Japan, Kyndryl 

    Jihyun "Cathie" Tak is Counsel and Compliance Officer for Asia Pacific and Japan at Kyndryl (a newly spun-off company from IBM) with private and public practice and in-house experiences in Korea and Washington DC.  As Compliance Officer, Cathie has been focusing on anti-bribery and compliance advising internal clients on relevant laws and leading compliance operations throughout Asia.  Prior to Kyndryl, Cathie was with IBM and provided legal advice and recommendations to improve the company’s compliance programs while overseeing internal investigations and leading compliance efforts in various countries in Asia.  Before joining IBM, Cathie was Litigation Counsel at LG Display with extensive experience in anti-trust litigation and regulatory proceedings in various jurisdictions.  She also has experience and knowledge in international trade by working on World Trade Organization disputes as Legal Counsel at the Korean Ministry of Foreign as well as by working as an attorney at a Washington DC-based law firm representing clients in anti-dumping investigations and litigations.

    J. H. Choi is a founding partner of Choi & Kim, the largest maritime law firm in Korea.     Roger Chae
    Global General Counsel, Hanon Systems

    Roger Chae is global General Counsel for Hanon Systems’ operations in 22 countries.  Roger is a US licensed attorney with over 25 years of legal and corporate experience in the US and across Asia Pacific.  He appreciates the dynamics of business and welcomes complex issues – not only from a legal perspective but, also, through a holistic assessment (including cultures and personalities) -- to find viable strategies and attain the desired goals.  
    His diverse experience includes the judiciary, prosecution, private law firms (in the US and Korea), and senior roles for multinational public companies.  Roger resided mostly in the United States and Korea and, also, in China as a corporate executive for a US corporation.  Roger completed his studies in the United States, including JD and MBA.  He is an active member of AMCHAM Korea and an adjunct professor in the MBA program at Sungkyunkwan University, Graduate School of Business.

    Sung Cheol Han
    Partner, DR & AJU LLC

    Mr. Sung Cheol Han is the co-head of the International Practice Group at DR & AJU LLC. His practice is primarily focused on criminal defense litigation, international transactions, and antitrust & competition. Drawing upon his experience and expertise in international trade and dispute settlement, he has successfully resolved critical matters before the WTO. His representative cases include US-Korea disputes regarding anti-dumping measures, safeguard measures, and subsidies, among others.

    Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Han held numerous leadership positions in the Prosecutors’ Office, including Departmental Chief Prosecutor of Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office and Inspector General of Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. While working at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, he actively engaged in investigating and prosecuting numerous cases on IP infringement and antitrust. He has also served as Researcher of Institute of Justice, Legal Counsellor of Korean Permanent Mission in Geneva, and Director of International Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice.

    Senior Intellectual Property Manager, Louis Vuitton Korea

    Yusun Woo is Senior Intellectual Property Manager at Louis Vuitton Korea. She is responsible for protecting intellectual property rights of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) brands in Korea.  In such capacity, Yusun focuses on trademark law, design law, unfair competition prevention law while engaging in criminal and civil litigations for damages among other things.  Prior to joining Louis Vuitton in 2011, Yusun worked for three years at the Arbitration and Mediation Center of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland as a case manager in charge of administering domain name dispute cases under various international policies including the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).  She is a member of the State Bar of California.

    ELIGIBILITY 

    How do I know if I am eligible to make a submission? 

    We highly encourage all firms, individuals and in-house teams to submit, as we have numerous award categories to choose from. We welcome both past participants and newcomers to join the submission for the awards. 

    Is self-nomination permitted?

    Yes, we accept self-nominated submissions. We also accept third-party submissions, should you wish to nominate an external party or vice versa.

    Is there a fee required to make a submission in the law awards?

    No, there is no fee payment required for you or your firm/team to make a submission. 

    TIMELINE OF EVENTS

    When will the finalists and winners be announced?

    The shortlist of finalists will be released around 4-8 weeks prior to the awards ceremony. The winners will be exclusively announced at the virtual awards ceremony in December 2021.

    NOMINATION PROCESS AND ASSESSMENT 

    How are the finalists chosen?

    Asian Legal Business will compile all of the submission entries, and the ALB editorial and research teams will extensively review each submission to ensure the criteria are met in order to advance to the shortlist of finalists. We stress that this process is fair, impartial and not subject to external influences. 

    How are the winners chosen? 

    Once the shortlist of finalists have been announced, an independent judging panel will review and select their top three choices for the award categories they are assigned to. The scores for each award category will be tabulated, and the individual/firm/team with the highest score will be announced as the winner. 

    What are the award categories that I can take part in?

    Any law firms, in-house teams or individuals may take part in multiple award categories if appropriate. The researchers reserve the right to move entries from one category to another if they feel it appropriate. The researchers’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. 

    Who will be on the judging panel for ALB Korea Law Awards? 

    There will be an independent judging panel of at least 25 senior and expert legal industry leaders to review the submission materials. The judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A partial list of judges’ names will be released prior to the awarding ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards. 

    What will my contact information/my client’s information be used for?

    All contact information provided will not be disclosed to external parties; and will only be seen by our ALB research team and the judges panel. We keep the information on record internally, in case we need to contact you or your client regarding any questions or discrepancies in the submission form. 

    Where will my name/firm name/team name be published if we are a finalist or winner?

    As a finalist and/or winner, your firm/team/individual name will be published in ALB awards materials and print magazine. For more information, please contact us.

    Is my submission confidential?

    Any information you submit will only be reviewed by the ALB team and independent judging panel, whose names will be published. The material submitted will only be disclosed to the above; if there is any information that is strictly confidential, please mark clearly on the nomination form. Though we do our best to maintain the security of the information you provide, any information you transmit to us is done at your own risk and Thomson Reuters is not responsible for any unauthorized transmission of information.
